The Landscaping aspect is a very important part of the overall success and longevity of the course. The linking pathways, Borders, retaining structures, entrance gate etc, should give of the feeling of cohesion, functionality and aesthetics. Of course everything should be located in its correct position, so the course and its landscape flow seamlessly, without unsightly aspects. Courses should never feel oppressive, which is why we try to avoid high mesh fences and features that are just not suited to a landscape setting, Take for instance mini golf manufactured obstacles. They have their place but not on an adventure, links, landscape mini golf course.
We believe that if you take away then you must give something back. Removing a grass surface and replacing with artificial means there is now a shortfall for nature. This is one of the reasons we always include considered planting and features that encourage wildlife and negate the negative effects. Aesthetics is always in thinking so sometimes a diverse range of planting is required. However there is always a balance to be considered due to the nature of mini golf and the way some people play.
We decided to go with a formulaic plan using squares and circles as per how the romans organised their garden structure Due to the site being fairly well protected and sheltered with old roman walls in proximity we could go with a Mediterranean planting scheme that reflected the kind of plats the romans used. Herbs such as sage and tyme were woven between the lavender and agapanthus. Fig and olive trees fill in the gaps while dwarf conifers and yew trees surround the statues. Thee topiary clipped plants such as privet, eleagnus and photinia (with twisted stem) gives the impression of an organised well manicured garden
To make it really stand out it really does depend on where you are located and micro climate. If you are not in Devon or Cornwall then Don’t despair thou there are many plants that can be planted to give that feel. Top golf in surrey is one such course where we planted up a good array tropical feel planting. Cordyline, palm trees (Trachycarpus fortunei being the most hardy), Fatsia, phormium, corkscrew willow, ornamental grasses… Will all give the feel of being somewhere abroad. Be mindful though as during the severe cold snap in early 2023 we lost so many cordyline at Gunnersbury due to the site being exposed to the cold and harsh winds. For more info visit the Rhs website.

Ive seen balls fly in the border quickly followed by an eager child trampling over every plant just to get the ball
Even if you are on a budget be sure to leave room for nature. Buy small plants if needs be and allow them to grow and mature with the course. We are dedicated to the landscape as when we you plant something, it enhances the course and becomes part of it.
